Jakarta, 23 April 2022 — On Saturday (4/23/2022), Indonesia officially held the 2nd Pre-Summit Youth 20 (Y20) Indonesia 2022 in Lombok, discussing digital transformation, especially youth digital financial awareness.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in digital financial services. Unfortunately, there is still a large part of the world’s population has not yet reaped the benefits of the digital economy. Many people, particularly in developing countries, continue to rely on cash. Not to mention the obstacles to internet access and the challenges of digital financial literacy, including among youth. According to Y20 Indonesia and Cint surveys, 61 percent of G20 youth have difficulty accessing the internet, including unstable and slow connections.
Therefore, the first day of the pre-summit raised the theme “Reaping the Benefits of Digital Transformation: Raising Youth Digital Financial Awareness.”. This forum focused on government policies to increase digital financial literacy among the younger generation.
Budy Sugandi, Co-Chair of Y20 Indonesia 2022, stated that advances in digital technology present both opportunities and challenges for young people.
“Digital technology advancements have an impact on the younger generation.” Several public frameworks, however, remain ambiguous. “Government intervention, particularly in G20 countries, may set an example,” Budy said.
“The voices of young people are the voices of the present and the future.” “What we create today and tomorrow will not only represent the voices of young people in Indonesia or the G20 countries, but of young people all over the world,” he added.
According to Zainudin Amali, Minister of Youth and Sports, digital financial service literacy among millennials remains a significant challenge for this country. Suppose it is not balanced with increased literacy among youth. In that case, the overall growth of digital financial services will have a negative impact on them.
Therefore, according to Zainudin Amali, the Ministry of Youth and Sports encourages the younger generation to increase their curiosity and interest in reading about digital finance.
Meanwhile, SOE Minister Erick Thohir encouraged young people to take an active role as agents of change in digital disruption. The government has also made efforts to promote digital transformation by installing WiFi in villages.
“Youth involvement in nation-building is crucial. Therefore, I really appreciate this Y20 forum Y20 for formulating the best ideas for Indonesia’s and the world’s development, especially on four topics: youth employment, digital transformation, a sustainable and livable planet, and diversity and inclusion,” he explained.
Johnny G Plate also emphasized the importance of Indonesian youth as agents of change. “We know that Bill Gates founded Microsoft when he was 19 years old. Steve Jobs founded Apple at the age of 21 as well. This demonstrates how young people can lead digital transformation on a national and global scale,” Johnny explained.
“Today’s youth born in digital ecosystems play an important role as agents of change in today’s digital landscape,” Johnny added.
Zulkieflimansyah, the Governor of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), appreciated the 2nd Pre-Summit of the Y20 Indonesia 2022, which focuses on digital transformation. According to Zulkieflimansyah, the accumulation of technological innovations and technological learning processes is frequently overlooked in discussions regarding sustainable development.
“Many people, especially in developed countries, believe that developing countries, such as Indonesia, can pursue industrialization more easily than developed countries in the early stages of industrialization.” Unfortunately, technology learning is not free, it is not timeless, and it is not automatic,” Zulkifliemansyah explained.
“We need to make serious efforts to discuss this issue by presenting the best talents, such as the speakers here tonight,” he added.
On the first day of the 2nd Pre-Summit, several professionals participated in the discussion, including Ronny Hutahayan (Chief of Special Projects, Pluang), and Arianne Santoso (Senior Analyst, Government Affairs and Public Policy Google Indonesia), and Chris Agass (Digital Access Program Lead).
Akhis R. Hutabarat (Director of Bank Indonesia’s Payment System Policy Department) and Leontinus Alpha Edison (Co-founder & Director of Tokopedia) were also present.
Day 2 of the Pre-Summit 2 Y20 Indonesia 2022 will be held on April 24, 2022, with a sub-theme focusing on youth’s role in digital governance.
