Manokwari, June 18th, 2022 – Youth 20 (Y20) youth forum officially opened the 4th Pre-Summit on Saturday (18/6/2022) in Manokwari, West Papua, with the theme of diversity and inclusion, including inclusive education, as a focus of discussion.
According to Co-Chair Y20 Indonesia 2022 Nurul Hidayatul Ummah, inequality affects all segments of society and tends to affect vulnerable groups, often young people. Inadequate human resources investment and social intolerance in society are some of the biggest challenges facing the young generation today.
“The global youth population has now surpassed 1.8 billion.” It is the highest in human history. “If given the necessary skills, knowledge, and opportunities, young people can be powerful in driving development and social and economic transformation,” said Nurul.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, represented by the Deputy Assistant for Youth Partnerships and Awards of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Wisler Manalu, conveyed the same. He hopes that the Y20 forum will produce recommendations for improving the quality of human resources to improve the quality of life of young people.
“Focusing on increasing human resource capacity and quality in the greatest youth generation in history can be a powerful way to achieve social development.” “It’s a must for young people,” explained Wisler.
The Acting Governor of West Papua, represented by the Regional Secretary for West Papua, Nathaniel Dominggus Mandacan, expressed gratitude for implementing the Y20 Pre-Summit. He was pleased that this event included a diverse range of young people not only on a national but also on a global scale.
“This is a collaborative meeting place for various innovative and creative ideas among youth to advance Indonesia’s development, but also to contribute to the progress of the world and the benefit of mankind,” he explained.
A High-Level Panel discussion was held on this occasion, with Sandiaga Uno, Dian Triansyah Djani, Yenny Wahid, and Jaleswari Pramodhawardani presenting their perspectives on diversity and inclusiveness in the G20, as well as policy reform opportunities.
Promote Inclusive Education
The 4th Y20 Pre-Summit also featured a talk show on inclusive education. The speakers addressed issues ranging from education during the Covid-19 pandemic to education for children with special needs.
Kipin.id Chief Business Officer Steffina Yuli highlighted the digital infrastructure gap during the talk show, such as internet connectivity between urban and rural areas. As a result, Kipin.id offers technology that allows students to access subject matter without using the internet.
“There must be a solution to bridge them without waiting for digital infrastructure to be ready. We also need to ensure the solution is affordable,” explained Steffina.
Iwan Syahril, Co-Chair of the G20 2022 Education Working Group and Director-General of Teachers and Education Personnel, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, encourages each province to have a teaching university with a good education study program for special needs children.
“We must believe with all of our hearts that every child, including those with special needs, has and can achieve the highest educational expectations.” “A good education is based on this fundamental belief,” Iwan stated.
Non-formal education institutions, according to Presidential Special Staff and Kitong Bisa founder Billy Mambrasar, can be a way to take real action in realizing inclusive education.
“Indonesia is extensive with 17,000 islands. In Papua itself, villages and regencies are far from one another. The solution we can do is to return to our villages, open non-formal educational institutions, adopt the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology curriculum, provide access to other Papuan students and motivate them that tonight, 50 young leaders from all over the world gather in Manokwari. You can be one of them in the future,” said Billy.
On the same occasion, World Bank Group Youth Summit 2022 Manager O’Neall Massamba stated, “Education for young people is important so that they can participate in the economy and reap the benefits of economic opportunities. It’s also a means of encouraging inclusivity.”
