Our Sustainability Efforts
for Y20 Indonesia 2022

This is How We Do It

The organizing committee of Y20 Indonesia 2022 are aware that the creation and implementation of a large-scale event, will generate not only large amounts of carbon footprints, but also piles of waste. Therefore, we are committed to give ample amounts of effort to the best of our capacity, to ensure that our chain of events is as environmentally responsible as possible. To help realize this goal, we have established partnerships to help with offsetting the carbon we produce and ensure better waste management.

Hand-in-hand with Indonesia-based CarbonEthics, an organization that aims to restore the climate balance through nature-based solutions, we will calculate our carbon emissions generated throughout all of Y20 Indonesia’s Pre-Summits and during the Summit. Once the data is collected and reviewed, there will be an offsetting process where we have chosen coastal protection through mangrove planting to restore and protect Indonesia’s coastal ecosystem. Mangroves have a higher carbon sequestration capability than terrestrial forests, thus restoring and preserving this Blue Carbon Ecosystem is crucial to help mitigate the global climate crisis.

Alongside Waste4Change, an Indonesian company that provides waste management services from upstream to downstream, we aim to manage the waste we produce during the Summit period in order to prevent the majority of the waste ending up in landfills. All the waste collected at all of our Jakarta venues will be segregated, pre-processed in material recovery facilities, and will then either be recycled or composted, depending on the type of waste. Any residual waste will be treated with Refused-Derived Fuel Technology. A carbon-footprint report will also be given to wrap up the process.

For the Bandung venues of the Y20 Summit, to help manage our waste and ensure better traceability and documentation across the value chain, we have appointed a local application-based platform named Jubelo that engages in waste management efforts integrated with a digitalized benefits/incentives system. They will pick up our waste and process it with their recycling partners to better support circular economy efforts in the city. Proper management and treatment of waste is a very big problem in majority parts of the world and we need to support local initiatives like this to help us take responsibility of the waste-generating activities that we do.
